Using Kewpie Mayonnaise in Sushi

Kewpie mayo

What is kewpie mayonnaise?

Kewpie mayonnaise, the creamy condiment with a cult following, is a beloved staple in Japanese cuisine. Unlike traditional mayonnaise, Kewpie has a richer, creamier texture and a subtly tangy almost citrusy flavour.

This iconic mayonnaise, packaged in its squishy plastic bottle with the Kewpie doll logo, is key to making delicious sushi rolls. Or so I think. It’s definitely a lot more common in Australian sushi than Canadian, for some reason. I’ve converted quite a few of my Canadian friends who didn’t know kewpie existed!

I like to add it the imitation crab mix in my lion king rolls, on top of aburis and in my spicy salmon mix. It is also great in standard avocado and salmon rolls, with shrimp tempura, in California rolls … ha ha most sushi that I make gets a little squeeze of kewpie! Make sure you don’t overdo it though as you might overpower the subtly of your fish or other ingredients. One little squeeze should do the trick. It’s also great on poke bowls! I really should write a post on poke …

Where can you buy kewpie

My local big chain grocery store sells kewpie in the Japanese section. Try your local store otherwise once again, visit your favourite Asian grocer!

Other uses for kewpie

You can literally use this as your normal mayonnaise – it just has a slightly tangy / more citrusy taste which is great! Experiment by putting in on your burger, in a hot dog or even dip your fries in it. You really can’t go wrong, ha ha.
